{"id":483,"date":"2022-10-17T23:05:45","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T06:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/djam.biola.edu\/hopel3\/?p=483"},"modified":"2024-12-20T01:31:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-20T09:31:02","slug":"multimrep-story-ocfa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/djam.biola.edu\/hopel3\/clips\/writing\/multimrep-story-ocfa\/","title":{"rendered":"Fullerton mayor weighs in on potential OCFA merge ahead of decisive Fullerton City Council meeting Oct. 17"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fullerton city council members on Tuesday, Oct. 16, will determine the future of the city\u2019s in-house fire department after over a year of discussing whether the department should merge with the Orange County Fire Authority [OCFA].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week prior to the meeting, Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung evaluated the monetary cost and quality of service Fullerton would gain if the council decides to merge Fullerton\u2019s 113-year-old fire department with OCFA, an affiliation Fullerton firefighters have pressured the council to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is the quality of service that we get, should we go over to OCFA? That is one additional paramedic, so no additional firefighters,\u201d Jung said. \u201cIs one additional paramedic worth the $5 million additional cost to a budget that\u2019s already strained in an economy that\u2019s headed in recession? Would that be the fiscally prudent thing for Fullerton long term and its residents?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents during the public comments expressed a different perspective of the merge. From Fullerton firefighters to meeting regulars, more than one person quoted the cliche definition of insanity as \u201cdoing the same thing over and over again to get the same result,\u201d and encouraged the city council members to go ahead with the merge at a Sept. 6 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy are people leaving? Why can\u2019t we get people to stay?\u201d Fullerton Fire Chief Adam Loeser said at the meeting, pointing to consistent lack of funds over the years that led the department to its current state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, the city of Placentia split from OCFA in 2020 against union wishes after a year of spending millions on its fire department at the cost of other departments, according to a June 2020 <em>Voice of OC<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofoc.org\/2020\/06\/placentia-fire-department-to-take-reins-from-oc-fire-authority-after-year-long-battle\/\">article<\/a>. Jung recognized a similar sentiment from firefighters and the union in Fullerton, especially because the merge will raise Fullerton firefighters\u2019 salaries and benefits to a higher standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of external pressure from unions to go to OCFA,\u201d he said. \u201cOftentimes \u2026 the people and the unions align with me, but I really have to think about Fullerton\u2019s long-term fiscal health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t mind going [with OCFA], but when you\u2019re not the newest city in Orange County, but the oldest \u2014 at least one of the three oldest \u2014 there are different calculations involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Fullerton currently has a mutual aid agreement with OCFA, meaning OCFA and non-OCFA departments can voluntarily assist where another lacks resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fullerton City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 303 West Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fullerton city council members on Tuesday, Oct. 16, will determine the future of the city\u2019s in-house fire department after over a year of discussing whether the department should merge with the Orange County Fire Authority [OCFA].
