The LGBTQ+ community has been othered throughout history, but especially by the Church community. As someone who has grown up in conservative church and school communities, I have witnessed exclusion and hate against the LGBTQ+ community from the Church that is called to love thy neighbor.
God provided us a biblical template of love. As God first extended His love towards everyone, we are demanded to extend that love towards everyone, not only to those who are like-minded.
Upon choosing this topic, I was aware that this topic has created tension within the Church community. I think it is important for churches to discuss it as silence is harmful. All important conversations will have both agreement and disagreement. It is impossible to have these types of conversations and keep everyone happy.
I understand that every experience is different and that I do not know of all the issues and difficulties that the LGBTQ+ community face. After interviewing queer Latinas who I have known for months and some for years, I have gotten a glimpse of the different coming out experiences. Because of this story, I was able to see and experience the vibrant and diverse queer community. The women in my story helped me understand the complexity of their experiences. It is very encouraging to see how they embrace their identities and stand up for their rights.
However, hearing their struggles shows how despite the progress that has been made in the past decade concerning LGBTQ+ rights, there is still so much to be done to create an inclusive society and a safer space for the community.
