When I first started the research on the generation gap, I believed that much of what I would find would be similar to my own experience. However, I learned more than I would have through my own experience. As the daughter of an immigrant Latina, I have seen the gaps that are placed between my own mother in regard to educational settings and careers. Through this, I was able to learn more about the gap between mothers and daughters in different generations, as well as opportunity gaps between individuals within the same generation but in different cultures.
My progression throughout this project was based more on the research I read rather than the interviews. This made me realize that speaking about mother-daughter relationships and familial structures is a struggle for older Latina generations. I learned that despite not being talked about, the structures of Latinas are still rooted in the culture and continue to be everchanging.
Overall, I believe that this journey has heightened my own experience. I was previously confined to my own experience, but now I have learned more about an issue that impacts the culture that I so dearly love.
